Jesus Plans for Me

JesusasHeis_4

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11

He plans for me.

That thought strikes me deep in my heart. Deeper than any pain of the past or broken dreams. Deeper than any disappointment or heartbreak. Deeper than my insecurities or shame.

That verse from Jeremiah must be one of the most quoted verses of all time. I all but skip over it with a “humph” whenever I see it. Or have. Because it just – to be really honest – has always seemed like a “to good to be true”, Joel Osteen-esque kind of saying.

There have been many times in my life that “prosper”, “not to harm”, “hope” and “a future” didn’t seem to define my circumstances. At all. And I guess I had a really hard time getting past that. Seeing anything else.

I thought that maybe I had fallen too far. I had messed up too big. I had missed something too important. And that’s why I wasn’t experiencing what that verse speaks about. Life isn’t always Hallmark card perfect. It doesn’t always fit into a pretty, little box with a ribbon on top.

But my Jesus – Jesus as He is – He knows that. He’s not stumped by that. Or thrown off. Or surprised.

The real heart of Jeremiah 29:11 isn’t feel good words or an “it’s all going to be okay” pep talk.

It’s fact that Jesus plans for me. He has planned for me. Before the creation of the world. He will plan for me. In the good times and the bad times. Through the heartbreak and the times of exquisite joy.

Jesus as He is plans for me.

That is my prosper, my not to harm, my hope and my future.

  1. As I sit here, still sleepy this morning, these words are words for the soul. I’m filled with the wonder of His love and thankfulness for His plans, which are way better ones than I could come up with on my own. Just what I needed to read today….thank you.
